I have been receiving a steady stream of mail and books since being placed in my current institution. Y’all are bad asses!! To everyone who just writes to let me know I’m supported and remembered, either at letter parties or on your own, thank you. I love your letters and appreciate each one. Whether you are telling me about your pets, passions, interests, views, hopes, trumpets, or arm wrestling tactics (that wrist thing is cheating btw)… I find them all interesting and often hilarious. I am unable to respond to all of you every time, but I want you all to know I value every word and you make my week every time I get a letter. Also I am not able to send letters out of the US right now. I do want to send some love to Queensland, Australia. Your letter was awesome and I wish I could write back. An email from Hig to everyone this morning —
Hey guys, I have finally made it to a location that the BOP feels fit to keep me in. It is located in Lisbon Ohio and is a Federal Satellite Low. Most of the guys here are in one of two categories, either sexual offenders (in most cases NOT rape but downloading of child porn….le sigh) and drug dealers with too high a security level to go to a camp but who still deserve the lax of the politics of everyday life. I am happy to say that for the most part I am doing ok. I have some time to drop this line but I have so much to do today that I am unsure of exactly if I will find time to write everyone singularly.
Mark Neiweem of the NATO 5 accepted a non-cooperating plea agreement in court yesterday. He will serve two concurrent 3-year sentences, with credit for the 11 months already served and time off for good behavior. You can read the full press release here.
He is currently in transfer limbo but we will post his new address as soon as we have it. Thanks to everyone who has supported him this past year – it kept him strong enough to hold out for a deal with agreeable terms.

According to the Center for Constitutional Rights, environmental activist Daniel McGowan was released from Federal prison today after the Bureau of Prisons was informed that the regulation he allegedly violated by posting a blog on Huffington Post was ruled unconstitutional – in 2007. We know there are a lot of amendments to the U.S. Constitution, but we should hope the Bureau of Prisons and Department of Justice could at least remember the first one.
We’re sure this was an honest mistake and not punitive in any way. We’re equally sure it will never happen again.

Out of stamps? Cant find a pen? Well starting today we here at oppenpal have decided to make it easier for everyone to send letters to political prisoners by opening up our email (oppenpal@tormail.org) to let people email letters that will then be printed out and sent to our brothers and sisters in jail. Every week we will pay special attention to a specific case though as long as we have the supplies we are willing to send special requests to other prisoners. Letters will go out once a week. If you are already sending letters please do not stop as we are not trying to eliminate physical letters for our friends we are just trying to workaround some of the roadblocks people may face when trying to show their support. According to a post from the NYC Anarchist Black Cross, environmental activist Daniel McGowan was taken back into Federal custody earlier today. He had previously served time in prison and had been released to a halfway house. It is believed that an article he wrote earlier this week about being denied the ability to stay in contact with his family and supporters during his imprisonment – on account of his political writings and being labelled as a “terrorist” – are what caused the Feds to take him back into custody.
The Fear Dept must be working overtime to spew out irony this thick.
